Preparators/Collections Technicians for Installation


Position Description:

MIM seeks five highly motivated individuals to fill the position of Preparator or Collections Technician. These individuals will participate in all aspects of collections management, collections move, and exhibit installation activities for MIM as it builds an outstanding collection of musical instruments. This position will report to the Registrar, and work closely with staff in MIM departments, including Conservation, Curatorial, and Exhibits.

 

The Preparator/Collections Technician positions are part-time positions up to 36 hours per week and include some benefits. These are term positions of 8 months. Salary will be commensurate with experience.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Working closely with the Collections Project Coordinator and Project Registrar, assist with the packing of collections for staged movement to MIM’s permanent facility.
  • Assist in managing the receipt, unpacking, tracking, and delivery of instruments for installation on-site.
  • Work with installation teams to ensure the proper documentation and safe installation of objects at installation.
  • Assist Registration teams to receive, unpack, condition report, and otherwise document acquisitions and loans prior to installation.
  • Input and update collection data into MIM’s collection database, TMS, as needed.
  • Assist in the routine care and maintenance of permanent and temporary object staging and storage areas, ensuring the safety and security of collections.
  • Manage and assist in selected special projects and performs other related duties, as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Arts in Museum Studies or related field with 1 year internship experience handling museum collections, or equivalent experience as a preparator.
  • Knowledge of accepted museum collection management practices.
  • Must be technically literate, with experience with data entry experience and office software experience.
  • Ability to problem solve, work independently and excel in a high performance, team-oriented culture.
  • Strong writing and collaborative interpersonal skills.
  • Some travel may be required.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and climb a step ladder.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Local candidates only.
