Position: Controller
Essential duties:
Develop, implement and maintain the museum's accounting records, including budgeting, financial analysis, reporting, and forecasting.
Specific duties will include:
  • Process all receipts, disbursements, journal entries and other fiscal records in a timely, accurate manner.
  • Responsible for monthly account reconciliations and month end transactions.
  • Prepare financial reports for presentation to the Board of Directors, to include balance sheet, statement of activities, and statement of cash flow. Prepare cost/activity center financial statements and other internal reports as needed.
  • Oversee Payroll vendor.
  • Prepare the work papers and financial statements for annual audit and 990-PF tax return. Provide support to auditors.
  • Help select and implement financial and development/membership software.
  • Provide support for annual budget process, including operating budget, capital budget, and endowments.
  • Ensure that legal requirements, best business practices, accounting polices and procedures and museum policies are followed.
  • Provide assistance in overseeing financial aspects of building and exhibit projects.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as required or assigned.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate must bring energy, vision, enthusiasm, and resourcefulness to this important position. Exceptional organizational, negotiation, problem-solving, and communication skills are required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of accounting experience required. Non-profit accounting experience is a plus.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required. CPA or MBA preferred.
  • Ability to problem solve, work independently and excel in a high performance team culture.
  • Advanced computer skills, including full competency in use and development of spreadsheets, knowledge of database programs, experience in design and set-up of project and organizational accounting systems, and an ability to quickly learn and use financial software.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to work responsibly with confidential information.

Other:
  • This position reports to the President and Director.
  • As the museum evolves, some of the duties of this position may change.
  • Located in Tempe, AZ during planning stages of MIM; located in Phoenix, AZ once museum is constructed.
  • Interest in world music is a plus!
