Eddie Chia-Hao Hsu, PhD

Eddie Chia-Hao Hsu received his PhD and master’s degrees in ethnomusicology from the University of Texas at Austin. Among his previous positions, he served as an adjunct faculty member in Boyer College of Music and Dance at Temple University, where he taught the courses World Music and Cultures and Chinese Music Ensemble. He has written several articles about Chinese and Taiwanese musical culture, focusing especially on the relationship between music, Indigeneity, and sustainability.

Hsu is also a dizi flute player and multi-instrumentalist. A Taiwan native, he received his bachelor’s degree in dizi performance from the Department of Chinese Music at Tainan National University of the Arts. He has performed at various events, such as the 2014 International Accordion Festival and 2018 SXSW Music Festival in Austin, Texas. In 2016 and 2017, he was funded by the U.S. Department of State and University of Texas at Austin to lecture and perform at the National Academy of Performing Arts in Pakistan. Since 2012, he has studied and performed music in a variety of musical traditions, including maqam-based music on the nay end-blown flute, Taiwanese Indigenous nose flute, and Javanese gamelan. With his expertise in these musical instruments, he is primarily responsible for the Asia Gallery at MIM.
