Whenever musicologists study the colorful sounds of the Cuban diaspora, it’s nearly impossible for them not to mention Juan de Marcos González and his Afro-Cuban All Stars.
González has probably done more than any other person to bring traditional Cuban music to audiences outside the island.
As part of MIM’s 10th Anniversary in 2020, MIM’s Music Theater will present the Global Masters Series, which celebrates the creativity and musicianship of artists at the pinnacle of their craft. Each performance brings a unique perspective to the question of why music matters, helping us understand the deep connections we all have to music.
After gaining international fame for reviving the classic sound of Cuban son, Juan de Marcos turned the Afro-Cuban All Stars into a sensational showcase for Cuba’s most prodigious young musicians. De Marcos first gained notice in the U.S. as founder of the Buena Vista Social Club with Ry Cooder. The project resulted in both a Grammy-winning album that Rolling Stone magazine listed as number 260 in the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time and an Oscar-nominated documentary.
As part of the performance, Juan de Marcos and Dr. Daniel Piper, MIM’s curator for Latin America and the Caribbean, will engage in a brief discussion about the Afro-Cuban All-Stars, Cuban music generally, and how this island’s music became so influential and popular throughout the world. After the concert, the artists will participate in a Q&A session with the audience.
