In addition to works from composers of the canon, new pieces by noted American composers Viet Cuong and Nick DiBerardino will be featured in an exciting evening of sounds and stories.
Highly talented actor, voice actor, producer, and director John de Lancie is best known as Q in Star Trek: The Next Generation and the larger Star Trek franchise. He attended the Juilliard School on scholarship, and he has acted on stage at the American Shakespeare Festival, the Mark Taper Forum, and the Old Globe in addition to his wide range of film and television roles. He narrates the performance of Stravinsky’s L’Histoire du soldat.
Korean American violinist Soovin Kim is an exciting player who has emerged as a mature and communicative artist. After winning first prize at the Paganini Competition at age 20, Kim received the prestigious Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award, an Avery Fisher Career Grant, and the Henryk Szeryng Foundation Career Award. He regularly performs Bach sonatas and Paganini caprices for solo violin; sonatas for violin and piano by Beethoven, Brahms, and Ives; string quartets; Mozart and Haydn concertos and symphonies as a conductor; and world-premiere works almost every season.
One of only two wind players to have been awarded the Avery Fisher Prize since the award’s inception in 1974, David Shifrin is an in-demand musician and collaborator. He has appeared with major orchestras in the United States and abroad and has served as principal clarinetist with the Cleveland Orchestra, American Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, and others. A sought-after chamber musician, he continues to broaden the repertoire for clarinet and orchestra by commissioning and championing the works of 20th– and 21st-century American composers.
