To say that Stanley Jordan turned jazz guitar upside down when he came to prominence in the mid-1980s is almost a literal truth.
To see and hear Stanley Jordan play guitar is to witness higher-level instrumental performance.
During his four-decade career, guitar virtuoso Stanley Jordan has consistently displayed a musical persona of openness, imagination, versatility, and maverick daring. Whether he is boldly reinventing classic masterpieces, playing soulful interpretations of pop-rock hits, or blazing through straight-ahead jazz forays and ultramodern improvisations, Jordan takes listeners into unexpected musical territory.
Jordan made a splash in jazz circles in the mid-1980s, thanks to his impressive tapping technique: he strikes the fretboard of his guitar with both hands, giving him access to expanded melodic possibilities. He occasionally plays two guitars at once, and sometimes a guitar and piano at the same time. Jordan’s fluid, multilayered textures and virtuosity have raised the bar for excellence, and his music is imbued with great warmth and sensitivity.
