Due to concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic, all in-person field trips are cancelled until further notice. We continue to assess the situation and will provide timely updates to cancellations and postponements. We thank you for your support of MIM and invite you to participate in a virtual field trip experience.
Each field trip video collection is designed to support a dynamic learning experience for students to explore geography, discover MIM’s galleries, and create music. In addition to an orientation video introducing students to MIM, each video set includes tour “stops” related to each of MIM’s five Geographic Galleries: Africa, Asia, Latin America, United States / Canada, and Europe.
Visit the Musical Instrument Museum, Arizona’s best field-trip destination!
More than 6,800 musical instruments and objects are displayed in MIM’s five major Geographic Galleries and other exhibit spaces. Through state-of-the-art audio and video recordings built into every display, students can witness the creative spirit of people from around the world as they play instruments and make music.
MIM field trips are recommended for groups of ten or more students. A MIM field trip includes an orientation video, a museum tour, free-choice learning, and a visit to a hands-on gallery. Downloadable educator resources are available to extend and deepen the learning following a field trip to MIM.
MIM field trips are great for homeschooling as well! Homeschool families (including groups with fewer than ten students) are invited to explore the museum during exciting Signature Events throughout the year at field trip rates.
MIM offers six different field trip options for prekindergarten through 12th grade, each aligning with AZ K–12 Academic Standards.
Add an Artist Residency Program to your field trip! MIM’s Artist Residency program brings professional musicians from around the world to provide unique educational opportunities in the MIM Music Theater. (additional $2 per student)
Bring the world of music to the classroom! Downloadable hands-on activities, lesson plans, video clips and photos, and gallery activities are meant to deepen and extend the learning that takes place on a field trip to the museum.
Tours are offered seven days a week during regular museum hours. Suggested field trip times are at 9:30 a.m. or 11:00 a.m., with additional times for the Trailblazer teacher-guided tour. However, the start time and tour length can be tailored to fit your group’s needs. Groups are welcomed to stay longer than two hours, if your time allows!
$8 – Student tour admission (prekindergarten–12th grade)
$2 – Artist Residency Program (additional, per student)

$75 deposit or a Purchase Order (P.O.) will hold the reservation and apply toward final payment.

Chaperones help to ensure a first-rate experience for all students. MIM recommends that the school provide one chaperone for every five elementary students and one for every ten middle- and high-school students and will admit those chaperones at no additional cost. If more chaperones attend than the MIM-established ratio, they are admitted at an $8-per-chaperone rate.
Reservations are required for all school groups visiting MIM. Make your reservation by using the MIM Field Trip Request Form at least fifteen days in advance. Once your tour is booked, secure your $75 deposit (P.O. #, check, or credit card) within ten business days to hold your reservation. MIM will then e-mail your reservation confirmation and pre-visit materials. If you have questions, please contact the School and Group Tour Coordinator at 480.245.6919 or grouptours@MIM.org.
MIM meets all Americans with Disabilities Act requirements for accessibility. Please notify the Education Team prior to your tour for any special-needs requests.
